Overview

Join us for a 1-day program that covers all aspects of process automation using JDF technology and workflow. Understand the relationship between Web2Print, MIS, digital printing and prepress workflow solutions. Hosted by the CIP4 Education and Marketing Committee and Ryerson's School of Graphic Communications Management, this unique program will provide an introduction to JDF technology and workflow automation. JDF is intended to enable the entire industry, including media, design, graphic arts, on demand and e-commerce companies to implement and work with different workflows through a common, standardized file format. Come to this "JDF 101" seminar to understand the benefits and challenges of implementing JDF in your shop. See a live demo of JDF integration and meet with Executive Director of CIP4 - James "Jim" Harvey. This event was held in 2007 and 2008 and is back by popular demand in 2009. There is limited capacity, so book early.

Who should attend

This event is designed for small and medium-size printers, prepress users, workflow consultants, middle managers, senior management and technology implementers.

8.00 - 8.30 am Registration & Welcome
Dr Daniel Doz, Dean, Faculty of Communication & Design, Ryerson University, ON
Dr Abhay Sharma, Chair, School of Graphic Communications Management, Ryerson University, ON

8.30 - 9.15 am JDF Basics and Practical Considerations for Users. James Harvey, Executive Director, CIP4 Organization, MD.
Looking for ways to streamline production, save on labor and waste, improve throughput and connect with your customers? Jim provides an overview to JDF technology, featuring small and medium-sized printers and CIPPI award-winning examples of JDF implementation.
9.15 – 10.00 am Understanding JDF Product Certification. Dr Mark Bohan, VP, Research and Technology, PIA/GATF, PA.
No single device is likely to implement all that the JDF specification provides for, e.g. a RIP need not facilitate JDF preflighting, a stitcher doesn't need to handle image data. To specify exactly what individual classes of devices need to do with JDF, CIP4 introduced Interoperability Conformance Specifications (ICS) that enables JDF certification for individual classes of devices. Find out how it is done, and what it means for you.

10.00 - 10.30 am Coffee Break

10.30– 11.15 am Connecting Printers and Designers with JDF. James Lockman, Adobe Certified Print Specialist, ME.
JDF can be used with PDF to enable standards-based workflow automation for improved productivity. Learn how JDF is created from Creative Suite applications and how it can be used with PDF to deliver high quality printed output that can completely automate end-to-end print workflows, thus lowering costs and ensuring reliable output.
11.15 – 12.00 noon JDF Workflows from Prepress to Press. Peter Aston, Manager, Sales and Product Support, Prepress, Heidelberg Canada, ON.
This presentation will describe JDF implementation scenarios involving MIS, prepress, press and postpress. Integration from estimating and planning all the way to press using electronic job ticketing will be described. Computer based "press simulation" modules will be used to show a job moving automatically from start to finish in a press shop. Heidelberg is a founding member of CIP4.
12.00 – 12.45 pm Lunch with "Discussion Groups"

12.45 – 2.30 pm JDF Demonstration – Live and Uncensored
A live demonstration of JDF enabled workflow using press equipment and facilities at Ryerson University. In this session we will originate a job via a Web2Print portal, and then use the Avanti MIS system to manage and control production of the job. The image data and print production parameters will be passed onto Kodak Prinergy where we will construct the imposition and flat layout. Prinergy will send the data to the Creo controller DFE of a Xerox Docucolor 7000 for printing. The printed job will be taken from the output tray of the Xerox Docucolor and carried over to our Polar Cutter. Automatically generated cutting information will be downloaded to Compucut to cut the sheets. The operator will use a shop floor terminal to manually alert the MIS system that the job is finished. The Avanti MIS system will generate a job costing report and invoice. Throughout the process, job information will be sent back via JMF messaging.
Patrick Bolan, Josh Perkins, Avanti Computer Systems, ON
Nick Benkovich, Kodak Graphic Communications, Vancouver, BC
Jason Lisi, Thomas Sprinzing, Abhay Sharma, Ryerson University, ON
2.30 – 3.15 pm JDF and Packaging Automation. Ruben Cagnie, Product Manager, Workflow, EskoArtwork, Belgium.
This presentation will describe JDF standards for packaging and how JDF can be used for workflow and collaboration software in specific applications to packaging. Special issues involve the bar code, labels, step and repeat, die cutting and box maker workflows.

3.15 – 4.00 pm Workflow Automation and JDF. Lesley Hepditch, Workflow Specialist, AGFA Graphics Canada, ON.
Is the market ready for JDF? Are you ready for JDF? This session will talk to the enthusiasts who believe in full lights out production and contrast that with the skeptics who struggle with challenges of practical JDF implementation. This presentation will also review the concepts of process automation in print workflows using :Delano and :ApogeeX.

4.00 pm Wrap Up, Door Prizes, Close
